Introducing our latest D+D FACE, Josh Small, one of four founders of a snack product called ‘Hippeas’ which he appropriately describes as ‘healthy wotsits’. He gives us an insight into his life working in a fast paced and rapidly expanding start up.
Name: Josh Smalls
What did you do before Hippeas?
I used to run club nights in Oxford- I started at the Bridge and then moved over to Fuzzy Ducks, which I did for three years. It was good fun, but student life is intense! It was definitely time to leave. It’s nice to be involved with a healthy daytime snack and get away from the night club scene!
Tell us about Hippeas?
I would describe the product as organic chickpea puffs – healthy wotsits! Our flavours are Pepper Power, In Herbs We Trust, Sweet and Smokin’ and Far Out Fajita.
I only joined 4 months ago and it’s still very much a start-up. There are only 4 of us but it is moving quickly- we’re already in Planet Organic, WH Smith and we are going to be in Waitrose and Wholefoods soon. Exciting things to come!
What advice would you give to your younger self?
I’d tell myself to run more! And maybe take piano lessons, that’s something I always wish I had done.
What pointers do you have for people looking to get into the same industry?
Don't hesitate! Its such a fast moving industry, if you wait for too long you may miss your opportunity. So I would say don’t worry about ‘not being ready’, you’ll learn everything you need on the go.
Talk me through your style?
My style is relaxed and casual. I have to be out and about a lot during the day so I can’t wear anything too restrictive.
Which labels have caught your attention at the moment?
I really like a new range called Olive Clothing and I'm a big fan of the Shore Leave range at Urban Outfitters. I also really like what Scotch & Soda are doing at the moment.
Who is your personal style icon?
I like the style of a lot of musicians and rock stars, one being Matt Corby. He’s Australian and I lived out there for a year, aussies have cool style!
Favourite spot in London?
Carnaby Street is always a winner! I've actually been spending a lot of time in Dalston recently, there are some great hidden away restaurants & bars.
How do you spend your down-time?
I love going to see live music and you can’t beat listening to old records. I am also a big sports fan, I go watch Chelsea quite a bit!
If you weren’t at Hippeas you’d be…
I like start-ups! Anything that is new and fast moving. With start-ups you can try a bit of everything and be a lot more creative. I wouldn’t want to be involved in anything particularly corporate – I couldn’t imagine spending every day in a suit!
What’s next for you?
We are launching in the US, we’re going to be in 16,000 Starbucks across the states. We are also going to be in Wholefoods too. We are trying to coordinate the US launch with the UK expansion – it is a massive project but we’re having a lot of fun on the way!
