Introducing our very first Duke & Dexter FACE, actor Matthew Bentley. Earlier this month he let us take a glimpse into the vibrant life of a young, contemporary actor living in his native London.
Matt has been acting since childhood and is now furthering his career on the big screen. At the age of 24, he has just celebrated the release of his first major motion picture, Beautiful Devils, which premiered at Cannes in May.
Name: Matt Bentley
What did you do before acting?
I was a child actor, from the age of 15 I was auditioning for big movies but they didn’t work out. So I went to drama school and came back out at 22 feeling ready. I wanted to travel but I also wanted to do something productive so I moved to LA and networked and auditioned – the experience was incredible and the connections I made there got me back to the UK to shoot a movie.
What advice would you give to your younger self?
I’d do it all differently. I’d tell myself to slow down – it’s not a race. I was so het up with being James Dean at 24 years old. I used to think that I had to be a superstar in my mid 20s – if you want to be an actor to be a superstar then you’re doing it for the wrong reasons. I would tell my younger self to chill out – if you’re going to be a successful actor then you’re hopefully going to be here until your mid-60s.
What pointers do you have for people looking to get into the same industry?
Just know what is going on within your industry – whether that is stage or screen. Become obsessed with it. Do your homework and know your stuff.
Talk us through your style?
I’ve been a jeans and white t-shirt kind of guy forever. I’m a classic kind of guy. I think I am shabby in smart way – kind of like Tom Hardy.
How would you describe it in 3 words?
Simple. Mercurial and to be honest - lazy!
Which labels have caught your attention at the moment?
I like Paul Smith. I rarely dress smartly but I wore one of their suits to a festival recently and I didn’t feel completely weird so I enjoyed that.
Who is your personal style icon?
James Dean and Heath Ledger. I liked that Heath didn’t care about what anyone thought of his style.
Where is your favourite spot in London?
There is a pub on England’s Lane in Swiss Cottage called The Washington. It is an old, old pub – if you don’t know where it is then you aren’t going to find it. I’ve been going for years – I love it.
How do you spend your down-time?
I exercise a lot, I’m very active. I enjoy walking my dog – I’m out with him for at least an hour a day. I also watch movies - If I'm ever stressed out I'll watch a film, or two. It's quite a time consuming way to relax but it's escapism at its simplest form for me.
If you weren’t an actor, what would you be?
I think I would be a tennis coach in LA or the Bahamas – I’d follow the sun!
What’s next for you?
The film that I shot last year is being released this summer – it is called Beautiful Devils and is based on Othello. In terms of new projects, there are a few things in the pipe line that I'm excited about but in this industry anything can happen pretty quickly so I'm just keeping myself open to it all.
