Introducing our latest #INMYDDs story, brand ambassador and renowed sneaker head, Larry Lomotey.
Known for his punchy street style, Larry is a man of many talents. As Founder / Editor in Chief of mens style site The New Collections (a hub of all things fashion), he has partnered with brands including New Balance, Original Penguin and of course Duke & Dexter!
We caught up with Larry in East London to find out more about his many projects...
Where are you from?
I am originally from Ghana but I grew up in Northwest London, I now live in Cheltenham.
You have a few professions/interests… tell us about them?
Hahaha…. some people say I do too much but I always have the urge to create. It’s this creativity that led me to become editor-in-chief of thenewcollections.co.uk an online fashion hub I created, dedicated to giving our readers the latest fashion news. I’m also a photographer; I mostly shoot fashion bits for other people. I recently decided to start showing some of those shots on my Instagram.
But the job that takes up most of my time and pays my mortgage is at Dyson where I am a Senior Digital Creative.
If D&D did a collaboration with Dyson, what features would you expect the shoes to incorporate?
I think D&D and Dyson share a unique spirit and drive, plus the nonconformist attitude to be better every time! D&D definitely brings that to the table… I mean I haven’t ever seen a pair of D&D’s that didn’t make me think “wow now that’s different”.
What guides your creative thinking - where do you draw inspiration from?
I’m dyslexic and one of the benefits of this is that I think in pictures, so most of my life is me seeing pictures in my head and striving to recreate them. But also the people I choose to surround myself with will always inspire me.
You’re very bold and unique with your styling. Have you ever seen a piece and thought, I couldn’t pull that off?
Why thank you… not yet, I mean I do see people put some combinations together that makes me think “wow now that is out there” but mostly I will always try it on, it’s the only way to know whether it looks good or not and so far it has always looked good haha! I guess I am and have always been way too scared to do socks and sandals…
Who is your style icon?
Nick Wooster - I mean the guy is just fearless when it comes to style and that hair and beard combo is just epic.
What do you look for in a pair of shoes?
Comfort first, that is the main thing I don’t care how beautiful or stylish a pair of shoes are if they are uncomfortable they are just not worth wearing… style should not hurt.
Favourite pair of shoes you own?
Everyone who knows me knows my love of the New Balance 1500 sneaker; it makes up 70% of my sneaker collection. But the NB1500 I love the most is the “London cab” mostly because I have 1 of the 70 in the UK.
Favourite Duke & Dexter shoe?
This is hard because every pair of Duke & Dexter shoes I own are statements but I would have to say it’s the Blush Boot from the Pastel range.
