In February, we set off for the West Coast of America. 7 of us boarded a flight from Heathrow with one thing in mind – finding the ultimate leisurely pursuit under the Californian sun.
We found it in Beverley Hills, at the Holmby Park Lawn Bowls Club. With long figures dressed in white to fight off the beating sun, and the occasional bit of shade from the palm trees, we fought it out on a manicured lawn with a community of bowlers that have seen it all.
From old Hollywood faces through to retired New Yorkers, it was experience vs enthusiasm, the USA vs the UK, in a game of wit, skill and balance - as we quickly found out that bowls shouldn’t be a sport restricted to a niche – it should be enjoyed by everyone.
